African Italian Women Forum
The African Italian Women Forum is a space for dialogue and integration between women of different cultures, who share commitment for the analysis and improvement of the female condition.
It is based on the collaboration between African and Italian women in favour of different approach to integration through active participation in economic, social and cultural life of diaspora African women in Italy. Migration opens a wide range of possibilities for individuals and is an engine of growth and development for both the country of origin and that of arrival. It is at the same time a process which is accompanied by many difficulties and which is still characterized by enormous inequalities. The gender of migrant people determines differences in treatment or insertion, so we consider it essential to focus attention on women’s gender, even in view of the continuing increase in the presence of women among migrants.
Starting from our personal experience, we want to pursue and encourage equality and empowerment of women so that migrant women, particularly African women in Italy, can exercise their rights. The gender perspective must be included in all policies aimed at the reception, integration of migrants and cooperation with countries of origin in order to promote women’s autonomy projects in Africa. This is the only way to create solid foundations for inclusion, integration of future generations and the development of the society.
The African Italian Women Forum was born in 2018 in Turin thanks to the support of the institutions and the commitment of associations and important local realities. Over the years, it has been enriched thanks to the extending network and participation of international guests, with which the analysis of integration issues are addressed, looking at the criticism and expectations of African women in diaspora. Each stage collects new stimulus and identify new goals for future work.
